Super Mario Trunk or treat!!! This was a fun one. A lot of cardboard, I do like to incorporate movement, so invested most of my time on the spinning coins. A few other simple components really added to the overall look of the trunk installation.
Cardboard Super Mario Clouds
The clouds were a great item to give the installation some height. If I wasn’t running out of time, I would have made more. Simple cardboard shape, black construction paper eyes. Double layered and did some paint on the back side; the trickiest part is just keeping it from warping. Carefully adding the black outline gives it the animated feel and makes it pop.
Easy Green Hills with Wrapping Paper and Cardboard
The hills were also quick, using this matte green wrapping paper helped give it bold color. Yeah the back of the hills is a little messy, the night before was taping and added a layer to give it extra structure.
Bullet Bill
Bullet Bill was made by spraying an empty vinegar bottle black and printing some art on sticker paper. The put a straw on the back so it would be easier to thread through the fishing line for hanging. I needed 2, and posted a request on my local ‘buy nothing’ facebook page and someone was kind enough to leave on stoop for pickup.
Note, pale blue sheet for the sky, and the speaker in the lower right was playing Super Mario music on a loop.
Quick and Easy Brick Effect with Tape
For the bricks, a very quick effective way to create them was by using the natural color of the cardboard and using 1/4″ black painters tape to create the brick lines.
Mario Rotating Coin Mechanism
We had an old toy that was the right size and pace for the spinning coins; a conveyer belt from their marble run. Laser cut some gears to with teeth to match the chain and hole to match some bearings I had. The coins themselves were two gold paper plates attached to each other. The were held up by piano wire which is a very rigid but subtle way to hold up something light-weight like this.
DIY Chain Chomp
I found the idea for this one by searching, though I can’t find the original source to give credit! (It was 2 years ago, finally getting around to posting). Purchased a 24″ solid black beach ball from Beachballs.com, for the eyes and teeth used a very thin foam sheet I got from the craft store.. it was more forgiving with the curves of the sphere than paper would have been. The kids are pros at construction paper chain and knocked that out pretty quick.
